Scaling Your Business Can Work Both Ways
I’m running a unique promotion for this month over on ThemeJam. Buy any WordPress theme, get 1 hour of free private consultation.
The idea came to me while reading Rework last night. I was up to the chapter that talks about promotion during the early days of your company. Their advice is to use your lack of “big-ness” to your advantage. The fact that your audience is small right now means you’re free to try out different ideas, mess things up and fix them before your brand hits the mainstream.
So this got me thinking.
Since ThemeJam hasn’t reached overwhelming sales numbers (yet), I can take this opportunity to offer a personal touch to the customers who do purchase products from my new company. By offering 1-to-1 consultation sessions with my customers, I’ll be able to meet and interact with them on a personal level. That means offering assistance, support, expertise, bouncing around ideas, and most importantly, answering any questions they have for me… about anything!
By reaching out to my customers on this level, I hope to build real trust with them, repeat business, and maybe develop some new friends as well. Ultimately this should result in encouraging customers to personally recommend ThemeJam to their contacts who use WordPress. I’ve had success growing my freelance business through personal referrals and I aim to build this type of organic growth with ThemeJam.
The advantage of being the small guy
The big WordPress theme companies (many of which I admire) wouldn’t be able to do something like this. Well, they might, but they’d need to use a lot more resources, personel and time to offer 1-on-1 sessions with their customers.
Since my business is still small, I’m able to devote the time to a promotion like this. And I hope it exceeds expectations and fills up my schedule. I’m hungry! I’m ready to win over the trust of WordPress users, one customer at a time. That’s what being the small guy is all about.
Scaling your business
So the concept of developing a scalable business can work both ways. When folks talk about “scaling”, they’re usually referring to the idea of putting systems in place to let the business run itself and grow and grow and grow.
But don’t sleep on the flipside to the concept of scaling. Every business starts out small. Look for ways to take advantage of your small size. Most of the time, you’ll things that your larger competitors won’t be able to match.
Brian,
I have been reading a couple of your older posts (I guess I am still “obsessed” with “staking” you…LOL!) & I must say: I feel fortunate to have “stumbled” upon you through the “How Freelancers Are Using Social Media…” article on mashable.com TNX for all the nice spirits, sharing & passion!
Business now…
Is the 1-to-1 consultation session offer still up and running? ‘Cos I am waiting for the WP 3.0 release to purchase your Clean Slate theme (to start blogging again), and it would be grand to spend and hour picking your brain in real-time.
BTW, do you know when that release will be happening? It is supposed to be before the end of the month, right?
Also, I just got around designing & uploading my branded Twitter background @zofiamachnowski & would love to hear what you think. I tested it on different screen resolutions and still need 2 tailor it better for the smaller ones, but that will be on a different day…Time to go to sleep here in Israel.
CHEERS!
Zofia
@Zofia – Thanks for the comments and the kind words
The Clean Slate theme is fully compatable with WordPress 2.9.2. If you’re running 3.0, then you have the option to enable menu management, but other than that it functions the same on 2.9.2.
I don’t know the official launch date of WP 3.0, and I don’t think the WP devs know either. It’s expected before the end of May. If you or anyone’s interested, you can download and install the beta release available at WordPress.org – though it’s not recommended for “live” use.
I’m not currently offering the 1 hour consultation deal (that was an April 2010 special). However, I’d be happy to answer any questions you have via email. Shoot me an email using the contact form at themejam.com.
Brian,
!
Thanks for the reply
I just don’t want to install 2.9.2 to then update it to 3.0 after a few days/weeks, and do not want the beta either…
Will wait until the end of the month & hope they finally release 3.0
CHEERS!
